Range ammo vs carry ammo

Most shooters keep two kinds of handgun ammo. Full metal jacket (FMJ) is affordable and perfect for practice. Jacketed hollow points (JHP) are designed to expand and slow down in the target, which is why they are the standard for concealed carry and home defense. Many shooters train with an FMJ load that matches the weight of their carry ammo so the recoil feels the same.

Bullet weight changes the feel. In 9mm, 115 grain loads are light and snappy, 124 grain sits in the middle, and 147 grain loads are heavier and often subsonic, which makes them a favorite for suppressed pistols. +P loads run at higher pressure for more velocity, so only use them in firearms rated for +P.

Case material matters too. Brass cases are reloadable and work in everything, while steel and aluminum cases cost less but cannot be reloaded and are banned at some indoor ranges.

Handgun Ammo FAQ

What is the most popular handgun caliber?

9mm Luger. It offers manageable recoil, high capacity and the widest selection of affordable practice ammo and defensive loads.

Can I shoot .38 Special in a .357 Magnum revolver?

Yes. A .357 Magnum revolver can safely fire .38 Special, but a .38 Special revolver should never fire .357 Magnum.

What does +P mean?

Higher pressure than standard ammo, for more velocity. Only shoot +P in handguns the manufacturer rates for it.
